Once regarded as shita-e related to various crafts, the Meiji Period saw the establishment of “zuan” as a new profession. This led to a social recognition of designers as professionals. In addition, educational institutions began offering programs to train people involved in designing.
Focusing on designers’ works from the Meiji to the Pre-war Period, this exhibition provides a rare opportunity to appreciate designs found in production sites around modern Kyoto.
